Tired
of the same old coffee/pastry shops that you have visited here in Baguio City?
Do you want to relax and unwind while drinking a uniquely blend of coffee, soda
or smoothies? Dreamt of eating a big sized Cream Puff
that its flavors just
explode in your mouth in just the first bite? Well your problem is going to be
solved and your expectations will be exceeded by this Pastry Shop that we just
recently visited.
Being a
local of Baguio City, I honestly did not even know that there was a pastry shop
located in the near end of Legarda Road. And what gave me a shock was that
“SWEETMATES” has been in the business for more than 12 years now. I will have
two categories which are: Place and Taste. In which I will give my own opinion
about the said three categories.
1)
Place: Legarda Road
(Just in front of Pines View Hotel &
just beside Route 55)

Pros:
Their location is an ideal and almost perfect
place for families to get together, friends to enjoy the companionship of each
other, romantic place for couples, intimate place where the “Big Proposal
Question” to be popped, and in my case to meet new people especially girls hehe
(joke). Their location is perfect for
people who want to relax because it is far from the polluted city. Their
ambience really gives people a real taste of Baguio City.
Good news about the place is that
it is very tourist friendly. Legarda road is very easy to be located. And when
it’s time for them to go home, taxis and jitneys are very common in this road
so no transportation problem or whatsoever.

Con:
The
only downside of the place is that sometimes conversations are hard to be heard
when jitneys and some trucks pass by.
2)
Taste: King David’s Cheesecake, Chocolate
Cupcake, Cream Puff and Kiwi Sparkle

Pros:
With the Name itself: “Kiwi Sparkle”,
I expected it to taste like what it was described. True to its name, it
definitely tastes like a real Kiwi that is a soda form of the sweet fruit. The next thing that I “devoured” was the King
David’s Cheesecake; I was really surprised by its taste because of the rich
flavor and combination of sweetness that it possess. I was curious why it was
named as such so I asked the waitress, and I quote: Pinangalanan po naming ng
King David yan kasi po tulad ni King David, ay mayaman din po yan sa flavor (We
named it after King David, because just like him, it is very rich when it comes
to flavors). And take note, the King David’s Cheesecake is one of their
bestsellers.

After we ate at Sweetmates, I
immediately went home to share to my family the sweet taste and surprise token
that they gave us. It was the chocolate cupcake and cream puff. I first ate the
cupcake, and what can I say. Once you put it inside your mouth you will
definitely feel the softness of its content, and the richness of its chocolate
flavor. After that, I was excited to taste the cream puff most especially
because kuya Omeng said that it was the best creampuff that he ever ate. So then I took one creampuff and gave it a
bite, it was really a pleasant surprise because they are very generous in
putting in the fillings of the creampuff. And with just one bite, the flavor
just explodes in your mouth and ends up putting up a smile in your face.
Con:
The
only negative thing that I can say is that some of their cakes are so sweet. I
don’t know though what type of sweetener they are using so as of now, I can’t say
if it is good for people with diabetes.
My FINAL VERDICT:
Sweetmates
is the perfect place for those who are craving for sweet treats, romantic
ambience and soothing beverages. Prepare yourself to indulge in the awesome and
uniquely flavored cakes that they have in store for the people and tourists of
Baguio City.
Hurray sa cream puff na ang laki laki.. hehe
